New generic lines come on the market every month, so it's worth checking with your pharmacist to see if there's a cheaper alternative. Pharmacist Anthony Allan from the Chemist Warehouse says many of us are aware of generic medicines, but may not have the confidence to use them.
"Generic medications are an extremely good option for lots of people, not every brand of medicine has a generic but most do at this point," says Anthony.
In order for medication to be interchanged by the pharmacist, it has to be proven to be identical in the way the drug is released in the body. If you do change to a generic version, you'll find the savings are substantial.
"Sometimes up to fifty per cent or more on some types of medication but generally a significant saving every time you get a script dispensed," says Anthony.
So the next time you head to your pharmacy to get a script filled or buy an over the counter medication, it may pay to ask for a generic alternative.
