In the world of weight loss there are plenty of quick fix diets on offer.
Well now there's another option - promising to lose kilos quickly, called the Soup Diet.
There are two known soup diets designed specifically for weight loss - they are the Kickstart Soup Diet and the Cabbage Soup Diet.
Enough for one person for two days .. Have as much of the soup as you want, whenever you want.
Ingredients:
3 tomatoes
2 large cans of crushed tomatoes
2 cans of liquid stock (beef, chicken or vegetable)
2 cups of water
1 packet of vegetable or French onion dry soup powder
1 bunch spring onions,
1 bunch of celery, including leaves
2 cups of green beans,
3 green capsicums
1kg carrots
2 stock cubes (chicken, beef or vegie)
Method:
1. Chop all the vegies into small pieces and put them in a big pot with the remaining ingredients.
2. Add salt and pepper (not too much salt).
3. Boil rapidly for two minutes and simmer until it is nice and tender.
4. If you want it thinner add a bit more water.
CABBAGE SOUP
Ingredients:
6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
half a head of cabbage
1 package Lipton soup mix
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.
Method:
1. Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.
2. Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.
3. Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.
4. Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.
5. Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.
6. If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now. You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavours you will need.
7. Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Dietitian Julie Gilbert says you'll lose about two to three kilos, but that may include fluid and muscle mass.
She also warns against following the diet for longer than seven days.
"Because it's only one food group you're not going to be getting any protein, you're not going to be getting any carbohydrate in your diet," she says.
Overall Julie says soups diets do work, but should only be used as a kickstart to a long term, healthy eating plan.
If you can't commit to the seven day diet, simply replace one main meal a day with soup or snack on a cup of your soup for morning or afternoon tea.
