HEALTHY BAGS FOR BACKS - Wednesday 2 May 2001

More than ninety percent of people at some stage in their life will suffer from back or neck pain.
Dr Ailsa Patterson, Chiropractor, told us
"Most people that come to my Clinic think that it's a particular thing that they did yesterday, or the day before, or whenever their pain came on. It's not until you sit down with somebody and talk to them that you start to build a picture."
According to Dr Patterson that picture starts to develop from childhood.
"Things learnt in childhood. For example, learning how to walk, learning how to play your sport correctly, learning how to lift correctly, carrying your bag correctly, sitting in school or university or in your office all day.. the positions you sleep in…all can cause problems later on in life."
Particularly for children studying! There's no doubt students often have to carry a heavy mental load but Chiropractors are concerned about the physical load they're being forced to carry as well.
About 70% of children risk permanent spinal damage from childhood activities, including wearing overloaded and poorly fitting bags. Short of giving kids less homework.. until recently, this was the burden they had to bear. Now Chiropractors are recommending students use these new specially designed back–packs called a Chiropack.
The Chiropack has a number of special features including a posture board, which keeps children's backs the right shape. There is a waist strap, which places 80% of the bag's weight on the hips, close to the body's centre of gravity. Also the Chiropack has a chest strap to help distribute the weight.
But As Dr Patterson reminded us
"All the best intentions in world won't solve the problem.. if kids won't use them!"
