LOW FAT PANTRY - Wednesday 16 May 2001
by the Extra Team
Cold weather tempts many of us to make extra trips to the pantry in search of winter warming foods. But be warned! Dieticians say it's one of the worst times of year for stacking on weight.
Mother of three, Adele Prowd, is dreading the effect the colder months will have on her family's diet as they tend to live indoors more, are not quite as active and definitely pick a bit more through winter.
There are steps you can take to avoid emerging from this winter looking like a snowman and Michelle Trute, an expert on low fat eating, agreed to audit Adele's pantry to show her how.
"The bottom of our food pyramid is carbohydrates, so it's a good idea to have a look and see if the base of your pantry is from the carbohydrates group. Then just graduate to the saturated fats at the top."
The food pyramid Michelle is referring to requires we eat mostly carbohydrate- packed breads and cereals, then fruits and vegetables followed by dairy foods, meats and eggs, with the last and least being fats and sugars.
Adele's family's weakness is in the snack area, but fortunately Michelle has plenty of tips to overcome that problem.
"Try some sliced up lavish bread seasoned with a bit of salt on some baking paper cooked for about five minutes in the oven. A great alternative to your corn chips."
Michelle warns against using two-minute noodles and favoured rices as winter warmers.
"They're very high in fat and kilojoules as well. Great substitutes can be noodles and rice, cooked in some beef stock to give them the same sort of flavour."
Cooking oils are another one to watch, don't be caught out by those claiming to be light.
"Extra Light refers to colour and flavouring, not so much it's lighter than normal olive oil. A really good alternative is to use a little oil-spray while you're cooking or use water to sauté vegetables and meats."
Michelle suggests low-fat do-it-yourself alternatives and offers a final golden rule for fighting the winter weight war.
"Really think before you go and eat something."
