DINOSAUR DIET - Monday 21 May 2001
by the Extra Team
According to Dr Mitchell, we all have a gene that's nicknamed the thrifty gene.
The theory is about seventy-five percent of the population eats each meal as if it could be the last one for some time as was the case in prehistoric times. When this happens the body stores unused carbohydrates as fat.
As a result, people with the gene gain weight easily, often feel lethargic and get hungry between meals.
Dr Mitchell suggests taming the gene by increasing the amount of protein and decreasing the amount of carbohydrates, aiming for a 50/50 proportion of each.
He recommends avoiding foods like white bread, potatoes, refined pastas, flour and white rice.
And instead looking for green vegetables, whole grain bread, brown rice and thick pastas like fettucine.
Feeding the Dinosaur Gene - The 50/50 Food Plan Cookbook is $27.50 and the Taming The Dinosaur Gene book costs $16.50. Both are available from leading book stores.
